About the event
At the height of the Great Famine, the Ursuline sisters established “crochet centres” across Ireland. The craft was used as a means of relieving starvation as women and girls were able to create the pieces and sell them, thus generating income. This transformed crochet lace from nun’s work into a symbol of life, hope and pride. Even into the mid-twentieth century, Irish women could do a piece of lacework which they could sell to a local shop to help provide for household needs.
Join Marjorie Hopkins in this workshop to learn the basics of Irish crochet lace, creating a simple shamrock motif. Some crochet experience is preferred, but keen beginners are welcome.
Patterns will be available as part of this workshop. Participants may bring their own hook, darning needle, and thread (1.5mm hook and size 10 thread are recommended, though larger hooks and worsted yarn are acceptable). Should you need supplies, they are available for purchase with your ticket for an additional cost.
